Fiction Masterclass is designed for students with an interest in creative writing, although no experience is required. For reluctant writers, or for those who want support in academic writing, contact Sam Prestianni directly for 1:1 tutoring opportunities.

What makes fiction fun and exciting to read? What kinds of stories connect us to ourselves and others? How does a writer dream up memorable characters that live long after the last page is turned?
In this Fiction Masterclass, students will deep-dive into the fundamentals of powerful storytelling. They'll craft settings where "anything can happen," create characters that drive plot, and conjure plots that drive characters. Finally, they'll explore the ultimate question: Why?

Meet Your Instructor

Sam Prestianni is an SEL-first teacher, writer, editor, multidisciplinary artist, and founder of 21st Century LEARNING. For nearly three decades, he taught Language Arts, Humanities, and SEL Development in California independent schools (most recently at Marin Horizon) while leading his own summer writing workshops. A widely published former journalist and critic, his work has appeared in dozens of magazines and newspapers, including SF Weekly, New York Press, and JAZZIZ. He has edited books (fiction and nonfiction), published fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry (nominated for Best of the Net), and has toured the country as a literary performer and multimedia artist. Beyond teaching, he's currently working on a feature-length screenplay and a new music project. He received a BA in English with a Writing minor from University of Maryland. His post-grad professional development includes Association of Writers & Writing Programs, Learning & the Brain, and Global Vision Summit: The Power of Compassion.
